Buke Yashiki of Kakunodate, the samurai village of Hiroyuki Sanada The Twilight Samurai
Are there towns or cities that continue to live the ancient traditions of the samurai and have not yet modernized as much as in the rest of Japan?
No, that does not exist anymore. There will be people who at a particular or family level follow a series of traditions but not that way of living that one imagines. In fact, there is almost no such spirit or values that I think is what one usually thinks when talking about Japan. Some traditions are conserved, of course, and they are given continuity but they are not more than that, traditions or customs of the day to day, repeated, but in many cases lacking in content, conscience, lack the human part … Although this, I believe, is something that is happening to the human being on a global level …
By the way, there is a village, I think the only one where a samurai village (Buke Yashiki 武 家 屋 敷) is preserved as it used to be, this place is called Kakunodate and it is in Akita prefecture. In Japan, there are other Buke Yashiki but they are not as well preserved as this one. These houses were located near the castle and were where the samurai or bushi lived, with their family, servants, etc. In fact, some scenes from the The Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei) starring Hiroyuki Sanada are filmed in one of the houses of this village. This film that is the first of a trilogy directed by Yamada Yoji is a visual and narrative delight and is among one of my suggestions. I have visited Kakunodate many times, in each of the 4 seasons and I can tell you that it is wonderful.
